Globally, invasive species account for $423bn in losses each year, with a significant portion concentrated in the United States. They are estimated to cost US $120bn in damages annually, though the number has probably changed as the latest assessment dates back to 2005.
The Biden administration is spending $3.1 billion to convince farmers and ranchers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sequester carbon in the ground. It also hopes that the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities grants will help make amends for a century of systemic discrimination by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) against Black, Native and other “historically underserved” farmers.
Will the luck of the Irish shine down on Congress in March? Rep. Glenn “GT” Thompson, R-Pa., hopes so, as this is when he plans to finally get a new farm bill on the House floor. Thompson said March is the soonest he will be able to get a new farm bill on the floor, as at least three weeks are needed to get it from his desk to the House Agriculture Committee and then to the House floor. Thompson is chairman of the House Ag Committee.
The farm bill will be top priority in Congress and November elections are sure to raise the stakes. That could potentially create new complications for the spending package as members try to push through pet initiatives.\
Today, Governor Polis in partnership with The Colorado Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Colorado State University Extension, Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, and University of Colorado Museum of Natural History released the Colorado Native Pollinating Insects Health Study which is the most robust and detailed account of pollinator health ever undertaken in Colorado history.
After a temporary adjustment period, Proposition 12 is fully implemented in California, meaning all pork sold in the state must come from farms that comply with larger animal housing requirements.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced today that 15 projects in the state’s northcentral region were awarded a total of $2,478,520 through DEP’s Growing Greener Plus grant program. These projects work to protect waterways and watersheds, reclaim abandoned mine sites, and work to reclaim and plug abandoned oil and gas wells. This year’s awards exceed $12 million statewide.
