Food Tank: USDA Grants $7.5 Million to Support Urban Agriculture and Tackle Food Insecurity The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is providing $7.5 million in grants through its Office of Urban Agriculture and Innovation Production to support the development of urban agriculture and innovation production to tackle the food systems challenges facing urban communities. USDA: USDA Announces Grassland Conservation Reserve Program Signup for 2023 The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that agricultural producers and private landowners can begin signing up for the Grassland Conservation Reserve Program now through May 26, 2023. USDA: Registration Open: Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities Projects Launch Event On April 27, USDA leadership will kick-off the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities projects with a virtual event for producers, partners, the public, and other interested stakeholders.

They have an ambitious slate of conservation projects underway to address many of the issues at play. Farm Week Now: NRCS Funds Illinois Grazing Land Project NRCS awarded $12 million in cooperative agreements to projects that expand access to conservation technical assistance for livestock farmers and increase conservation practices on grazing lands. Funding is provided through NRCS’s Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative. Tribune Review: Murrysville, Conservation District to Host ‘Healthy Stream Walk’ The municipality of Murrysville and the Westmoreland Conservation District will host a walking tour along Haymaker Run, to educate residents about ways to reduce water pollution in local streams. Finger Lakes Times: State Adds $370,000 to Finger Lakes Cover Crop Initiative The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the state Department of Agriculture & Markets have announced the addition of another $370,00 to the Finger Lakes Cover Crop Initiative. NC State University: Earth Day Special Highlights Soil-Based Solutions A new special examines natural solutions to mitigate evolving climate impacts and explores statewide environmental concerns told by the people they affect and the research addressing them, including two soil programs from the North Carolina (NC) Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. Corning Observer: Glenn County RCD Shares Cover Crop Project Progress An ongoing Healthy Soil Program project being conducted by a partnership between Glenn County Resource Conservation District (RCD) and other local organizations shares the benefits of cover crop use. University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Second Nebraska Soil Health School Registration Open The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host a second, two-day Nebraska Soil Health School to build upon soil-related knowledge and practices for producers and ag professionals. The Tennessee Tribune: Urban Forestry Program Offers Funding to Improve City Landscapes Applications are now available for the Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program Community Tree Planting Program to increase and improve urban tree populations. La Crosse Tribune: Conservation Work Funded for Winona Area Watersheds The Mississippi Winona-La Crescent Watershed Partnership passed its first work plan this month, assigning more than $577,000 in state funds to projects aimed at protecting surface and groundwater, maintaining habitats and promoting sustainable land use practices. NRCS: Prairie Pothole Region Receives Four Million in Water Bank Funds The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has been granted four million dollars toward landowner enrollment in the Water Bank Program to target preserving and improving contributing major habitat for migratory waterfowl and other wildlife. The News-Review: Students Spend a Day Learning in the Woods During Annual School Forestry Tour Hundreds of fifth graders from across Douglas County traveled to the Glide Educational Forest on Wednesday morning to take part in the annual Douglas County School Forestry Tour.
